Track Profile: If I Will Be There

About this track:

If “How Beautiful You Are” (1997) was inspired by French poetry (The Eyes of the Poor by Charles Beaudelaire), “If I Will Be There” is likewise inspired by a famous text by the French poet Alfred de Musset (for a translation, see this link; for the French see this link). To compare:

Now, ere this feeble heart beneath youth’s spell,
To its illusions bids a last farewell,
I fain would keep the old philosophy
Which makes Epicurus divinity.
I fain would live and love, and learn mankind,
In quest of joy, small profit hope to find,
And do what men can do, be what they are,
Gaze upward to the sky nor feel one care.

And if by haunting visions thus bent,
My heart the real seeks some joy to get,
With each vain pleasure summoned to my aid,
Disgust and gloomy death my sense invade.
The very days when impious is my thought,
When ending doubt denial full has brought

Hope fills the earth with infinite surmise,
In our despite toward heaven we lift our eyes!”

My heart is feeling young, still filled with youthful dreams
I have to say good-bye to my illusions dear
And I would like to pray, as in the Roman days
“Live now for we must die”
But can I live this way?
I simply want to breathe, to live and see the world
I hope to feel some joy and may it all be real
Just be the way I am, and let us be alive
Without a fear to gaze above the empty sky

And if my heart is weak, obsessed by ancient dreams
Return to what is real to find another day
I drown in pleasures vain, I thought would lift my soul
But now I cannot stand because my breathing is pain
Now comes a stranger day, rebellious thoughts arise to
Deny that everything, is there, so doubt will fade
A hope as bright as light forever fills the skyy
Above and through the cloud to heaven we must cry

The Cure - How Beautiful You Are

Lyrics:

My heart is feeling young, still filled with youthful dreams
I have to say good-bye to my illusions dear
And I would like to pray, as in the Roman days
“Live now for we must die”
But can I live this way?
I simply want to breathe, to live and see the world
I hope to feel some joy and may it all be real
Just be the way I am, and let us be alive
Without a fear to gaze above the empty sky

I’m never gonna waste another day
I’m never gonna fail like yesterday
I don’t know, i don’t know
If i can be the one…

And if my heart is weak, obsessed by ancient dreams
Return to what is real to find another day
I drown in pleasures vain, I thought would lift my soul
But now I cannot stand because my breathing is pain
Now comes a stranger day, rebellious thoughts arise to
Deny that everything, is there, so doubt will fade
A hope as bright as light forever fills the sky
Above and through the cloud to heaven we must cry
I’m never gonna stall like yesterday
I’m never gonna lose another day
Cause i don’t know, even now
If i will be there…
